Summer Ride Toy and Play Safety TipsSummertime is the best—all of my friends are home, we’re done with school for the year, and we have the longest days of the year to play. No agenda except to let our imaginations run wild. But with great power comes great responsibility—Spiderman taught us that—so let’s talk about a few summer safety tips to keeping me and my friends safe and happy all summer long.
Kids’ Safety Can Be Fun!
Safety doesn’t have to be a snoozefest—even I know that. But it can feel like a bore when parents don’t tackle it in the right way. So here’s a kid-approved version of a few important summer safety tips—when you take your kids’ safety and their opinions into account, it makes the whole thing so much easier.
1. Make Us Drink—but Let Us Choose. Many kids don’t feel thirsty before they get dehydrated, and the hot temperatures of summertime can make dehydration a real concern. So definitely—keep us hydrated. But let us choose between a few good choices—water and sports drinks are some good options—so that we think it’s our idea.
2. Keep Us Protected from the Sun. One of the most important summer safety tips focuses on sunscreen. Even if you’re out of the pool or water, everyone should be protected by at least an SPF 15 while outside. But it’s SO BORING to apply and reapply. Maybe opting for something easier, like a sunscreen stick for noses, or something fun, like colorful sunscreen, may help us feel like it’s a game. Even describing the sunscreen as “warpaint” or something equally fun can make this kids’ safety chore seem less like a drudgery. Also, keeping us in light colored clothes will help lessen the sun’s effects.
3. Keep An Eye on Us—and Out for Us. Just because we’re playing doesn’t mean we don’t need supervision. Especially when we’re using our cool ride-on toys or playing with water, we need the adult eye. You know us—we’re bound to get an idea that is less than wise—we need you there to intervene. Also, make sure that we’re not playing near something dumb (like water). Water is like a pied piper to a kid. Unless we’re supposed to be swimming, keep us (and our toys) away from the water. Please, also—don’t let us play in traffic, no matter how much we beg.
4. Give us cool kids’ safety gear. This one isn’t just a part of our summer safety tips—this one is for every day. We need to be wearing helmets and elbow/knee pads every time we head out on bikes or ride on vehicles. Let us choose what we wear and we will be much more likely to care deeply about kids’ safety.
When you’re watching out for us in the dog days of summer, remember these summer safety tips—and let us exhaust ourselves. We promise—it’ll be the best summer of our lives!
